Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

It’s FRIDAY!

And it’s Memorial Day weekend!

Happy Memorial Day!

As many of us will be spending time with family and friends at the beach or pool I hope we can all take a moment to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom. I know I’m eternally grateful and forever indebted to the brave men and women of our country who gave everything for us.

Today, I had planned on writing a Friday Favorite post but I decided I’m going to write a couple of thoughts and ideas on celebrating Memorial Day. Enjoy!

Visit a War Memorial or National Cemetery

So you may be thinking I don’t know of any war memorials or National Cemeteries near me…Google it! I typed war memorials in Tampa and National Cemeteries near me and wow! We have some less than 15 minutes from us! I couldn’t believe it! We will be taking some time out of our weekend to visit one of them and to pay our respects to those fallen.

Watch a war movie/documentary

There are so many American war movies/documentaries available. Some of our favorites are Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, WWII in Colour, and pretty much anything by Ken Burns.

Spend time with family and friends

Growing up we’d get together on Memorial Day weekend with cousins at my Aunt and Uncle’s beach house on Dauphin Island. Those were some of the best memories of my childhood.

Fast forward to the present day, John and I have always tried to do something with family on this long holiday weekend. This year we’ll be hanging out by the pool with John’s family. I’m so excited to spend time with family, eat yummy food, soak in the sun, and drink some of my father-in-law’s home brew! Some of the best beer by far!

Make memories with your kids and family this holiday weekend. Do something fun, do something different, do something that requires sunscreen and a bathing suit for most of your day, but most importantly do something that shows your children you are grateful for those who gave their lives for our freedom. I always try to remember that actions speak louder than words. So visiting, watching, learning about those who have gone before us will last a lifetime.

Where has time gone?! This was one year ago!

Happy Memorial Day weekend friends and family! Thank you to all those who serve our country, have served our country, and special thanks to those Hidden Heroes who are taking care of the wounded. You are AMAZING!
