Are you a stay at home mom overwhelmed by the day to day? Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror at 3 pm and wonder why you never took the time to get dressed? Come join me as I talk about how to take care of yourself as a stay at home mom!
Being a stay at home mom was a dream of mine since I can remember. It’s something my husband and John and I worked very hard for.
I knew from an early age I was made for this. I was made to be a mommy. And while it seems like being a stay at home mom would be an easy job, let me tell you, it’s not for the faint of heart.
As a stay at home mom you must have great willpower to get things done and take care of your babies, yourself, and your home.
So today I wanted to share with you 10 ways I take care of myself as a stay at home mom. Basically, how I keep sane. 😂
10 Tips | How to take care of yourself as a stay at home mom
Wake up before your kids wake up
You guys, I love sleep. Like super duper love it! I love it so much I cried on the way to the hospital to give birth not out of pain but because I was worried how much sleep I was going to lose. Weird I know.
But for loving sleep so much, I wake up every weekday morning at 4:15 am. CRAZY!!! I know! I think that each morning when the alarm is going off.

I wake up at this time because no one else is awake yet. The house is quiet. I get my prayer time in, I read, I blog, I sit quietly and drink coffee till my husband gets up.
And when I don’t do this, I feel all out of wack.
I heard one time “wake up as (insert your name here), don’t wake up as mom”. When you wake up and have to start being a mom right away you won’t get a chance to gather yourself and present yourself as well.
So wake up even if it’s 30 mins before you kiddo. Wash your face, brush your teeth, drink some coffee, read a book, say some prayers. I promise you will be so thankful you did this!
Keep a clean home
I realize this may seem weird to say keep a clean home in an article about taking care of yourself but for me, a clean home equals a clear mind. I usually try to do this by just picking up after myself and having Caroline help. You can read this post I wrote all about setting timers to do things that I don’t like doing i.e. cleaning.
Use quiet time every day
Take time to have you and your kiddos partake in quiet time everyday. Even if they take naps. Take a look at this post all about quiet time.
Focus on teaching your children to have good sleep habits
Teaching your kids to have good sleep habits, in the beginning, will only help you in the long run. If your child can take a 2-hour nap and sleeps through the night your life will be so much better, I promise. Take a look at Caroline’s sleep journey here.
Take time to get ready in the morning
Every morning after I workout, I take a shower and get partially ready. After breakfast, I put on some makeup and clothes that I feel comfortable going out in. This way I don’t look at myself in the mirror at 11 am or even 5 pm and wonder why I look awful.
Workout

Whether you go on a run, walk, do yoga, or a cricut training do something to take care of your body. Sometime ago I learned I needed to get my workout in before John left for work. John’s departure for work gives me a hard deadline to get my workout in and showered all before he leaves.
Do something you enjoy
Pick something you like to do, do it everyday and don’t feel guilty about it.
I for instance love to read magazines. I read them everyday. Whether I take 5 minutes or 20 minutes to do this I usually do it.
Allow your husband to help you in the mornings and evenings
You don’t have to do everything around the house and you are not the only one responsible for your children. Let your husband help out. John helps a lot and I’m super thankful. He unloads the dishwasher in the morning, gets Caroline up out of bed, plays with her in the evenings, bathes her, and helps get her ready for bed. In these moments I can do things like workout, write a blog post, take a shower, or just put away laundry peacefully. Just because you’re a SAHM doesn’t mean you need to do EVERYTHING.
Have a hobby
Whether your hobby is scrapbooking, digital organization, sewing, beading, collecting shells, or blogging try to find something that interests you. Even if that thing is brand new to you. Blogging is my hobby which is also becoming a business for me. I love having something I can work on during naptime and at different times throughout the day. It keeps my mind going and I love that!
Take a bath

This may sound funny especially if you are not a bath person. But seriously do something every once in a while that is relaxing for yourself. For me, it’s taking a bath with Epsom salt every once in a while. That might be once or twice a month but it is so nice. Do something that relaxes you and if you can do it while your husband watches your kids or they are asleep, even better.
And that my friend about sums it up! I know there are many other ways to take care of yourself as a stay at home mom but these are just some of the ways I like to stay healthy and happy.
I hope you are able to find some inspiration here because I know a Happy Mama = Happy Family!

Love these ideas! I️ agree with you – it’s definitely NOT for the faint of heart! I️ dreamed of staying home as well, but some days at home are much messier than I️ pictured as I️ sat at my desk in my corporate office years ago. With that said, I️ wouldn’t trade it for anything! <3
